Bean & Bread is an independent speciality-coffee and brunch café with locations in Abergavenny and Rogerstone, Newport.

It is a food-led, design-conscious café offering a distinctive experience, serving high-quality, South Pacific-inspired food and seasonal brunches.

Its customers are quality-conscious locals who enjoy good coffee, quality food and attractive, independent places to meet. They value a stylish, comfortable and sociable café experience where they can linger over coffee or brunch.

Outdoor Space as a Revenue Opportunity 

The café owner needed to make the outdoor seating area more usable in changing weather because its exposure to sun and rain limited how often customers could comfortably use the space, reducing the café’s available covers and its potential to generate additional sales and revenue.

Our customer needed to create a solution that would:

• Be low maintenance in terms of cleaning

• Maximise the outdoor space, both aesthetically and in terms of seating capacity

Comfortable, Outdoor Seating for Every Forecast

David met with the café owner to discuss her needs and requirements for the business.

During an in-depth conversation, we explored various options that maximised the space and enhanced the customer experience, including a retractable awning, glass veranda and retractable fabric veranda.

After carefully evaluating each structure as a viable option with the business owner, we concluded that the café needed a versatile system that would allow staff to adjust the amount of sun, shade and cover, providing maximum comfort for both customers and staff.

A 6m x 3.5m pergola with watertight rotating roof louvres and integrated LED lighting gave the café owner and staff a way to control the amount of sun, shade and cover. Its range of adaptable features would allow the café to make greater use of the space throughout the year:

The result is a stunning outdoor space created by a louvred pergola in Field Green, chosen to complement the business’s branding and the location’s décor.

Dimmable integrated LED lighting extends the daily use of the outdoor space, allowing Bean & Bread to create a cosy, welcoming atmosphere later in the day.  

The lighting also helps to create a distinctive customer experience and differentiate Bean & Bread from local competitors. 

Meanwhile, the adjustable louvred roof provides protection from sun and rain, extending the outdoor season and enabling customers to use the area comfortably during more months of the year. 

The pergola has transformed the outdoor space into a cosy and intimate area. By making it more usable throughout the day and across more of the year, it has increased the space’s potential to generate additional sales and revenue and deliver a return on the investment.
